Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE)
At De La Salle College, our Gifted and Talented Education Program (GATE) is specifically tailored to recognise and nurture the unique potential of our gifted and talented students. Our holistic approach ensures that these exceptional learners are not only academically challenged but also receive comprehensive pastoral and curricular support. By accurately assessing and cultivating their individual strengths, we aim to foster an environment where their talents are celebrated, and their intellectual curiosity is continuously ignited.
Our vision extends beyond the confines of the classroom; we aspire to provide a platform where these extraordinary minds can shine, be it locally, nationally, or internationally. GATE at De La Salle College is more than just an education program—it’s a commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators, and thinkers, paving the way for their remarkable contributions in an ever-evolving world.
Literacy Support
The Literacy Support Program at our college is a dynamic initiative designed to enhance students’ reading and writing skills. Conducted in small group sessions, this program is led by specialist teachers who focus on targeted instruction to elevate students’ literacy abilities. Whether it’s developing foundational reading skills or advancing writing techniques, our program is tailored to meet the specific needs of each student, ensuring a personalised and effective learning experience.
For younger learners in the primary years, our Primary Literacy Support Program offers intensive reading intervention. Groups of up to six students engage in an 8-period cycle, where they receive focused attention and support to strengthen their foundational reading skills. This early intervention is crucial in setting the stage for future academic success and confidence in literacy.
As students’ progress to Years 7 and 8, the Literacy Support Classes take a more structured approach, replacing language subjects for five periods every fortnight. Here, the emphasis is on building word knowledge and literacy skills through focused intervention. For those in Years 9 and 10, the program shifts its focus towards refining reading comprehension and written expression. Students are equipped with essential skills such as summarising, note-taking, character analysis, and more. They receive structured guidance in paragraph planning and writing techniques, preparing them for the advanced literacy demands of higher education and beyond.
Strive Program – Year 10
The STRIVE Program at our college is a unique offering, specifically designed for Year 10 students to explore a blend of elective subjects along with vocational training and applied learning. This program is an ideal pathway for students to discover and harness their strengths, passions, and essential skills, setting them up for success in their educational journey, future careers, and life.
Tailored to support students facing various challenges, whether it’s missed learning opportunities, diverse needs, or risks of disengagement, STRIVE also serves those with a clear vocational direction in mind. The program’s hands-on approach not only imparts vital knowledge and skills but also fosters resilience, independence, and a passion for real-world learning. This empowers students to make informed decisions about their future, be it in higher education or vocational pursuits.
At its heart, STRIVE focuses on personal growth, enhancing each student’s confidence and self-worth. This nurturing approach ensures a positive and motivating learning environment, encouraging full engagement and progress in their educational and personal development journey.
