In 2024, Joey Valcanas (College Dux) achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Geography, taught by Mrs Georgina Dwyer. Within the state, there were only seven study scores of 50 awarded in the subject of Geography. The Humanities Learning Area would like to congratulate Joey on being one of the seven students – this is a fantastic achievement. Other notable success stories include Joshua Summer’s score of 45, and Jim Tobin’s score of 44.
I have been fortunate to have experienced the excitement of the Humanities subject area at De La Salle College since Year 7; however, I was most interested in the versatility and detail of Geography throughout my secondary education. In Year 12, our study of changing physical environments and population structures both locally and globally was guided by the enthusiasm and expertise of Mrs Dwyer, who kept the class motivated at all times during the year. It is no doubt that the structure of each class and individualised support of Mrs Dwyer enabled a number of students to fulfill their potential in 2024.

The 2024 Geography class scored 10.9% higher on their exam (with an average exam result of 70.9%) than the state average (60%). Furthermore, 70% of students achieved a higher study score than the GAT predicted study score; this means that the overwhelming majority of the class were able to achieve above and beyond their potential.
Congratulations to the 2024 Geography students!
